Assess students' understanding of a character in a whole-class or independent novel with this easily-adaptable assignment that challenges students to design a bookcase that reflects a character and his/her life by stocking a pre-created bookcase that would be on display in a character's home.

Students must select five books and five objects that reflect their character and then defend their responses with evidence from the text. An example based on Odysseus is included. Students love the creativity of this assignment! This also works as a great no-prep sub plan!
