Analysis is an extremely important skill for middle and high school students. If you're anything like me, you're looking for ways your students can analyze different text elements without making them feel like it's redundant or boring. I devised this assignment partially because I love memes and partially because memes are so popular in our society (and not just among youth!).
In this assignment, students are asked to create a "What people think I do, / What I think I do..." meme as a reflection of a character in a novel or story they are currently reading. You could use this assignment with a whole class novel or an independent read. It could be required or used on a choice board as a form of differentiation.
The purpose of the assignment is to provide a creative way for students to analyze characters in the story. More specifically, students can use this to empathize with their character, to show their ability to pick up on both indirect and direct characterization, to reflect understanding of the characters' conflicts and decision-making skills, to show insight into a character's motivations and beliefs, and more.
Included with this assignment are directions for students, a basic rubric, and a template for the meme. I hope your students have as much fun with this assignment as mine!
