The characterization graphic organizer focuses on the main methods in which a reader can infer character traits from a piece of text: feelings, thoughts, actions, words, physical description, and stated directly by the author. It asks the reader to quote or paraphrase the evidence as well as label the page number (MLA style). This allows for easy preparation for writing.
In the analysis paragraph, the student will write about a chosen character and his/her traits by providing evidence determined on the graphic organizer. There are three follow-up questions that address the relationship between characterization, impact of events, and character motivation.
The graphic organizer and analysis activity can be used with any text and are adapted to meet the Common Core Standards. Sample responses are included in the handout as well as a grading scale.
