To get my students started on a character analysis essay, I often use the brainstorming/pre-writing activity included here. It requires students to start thinking more critically about their selected character. They are asked to question the character's motivation, his or her involvement in the advancement of the plot, and his or her defining traits - among other things. They are even required in the pre-writing activity to harvest potential quotes for use in their essay. This is a very helpful brainstorming activity. Also included in this file are checklists for each paragraph of the paper. I often have students complete and turn in the checklists throughout the writing and editing process. This is especially helpful for emerging writers. I hope this product is useful to you and to your students.
