In this project, students will read a novel (either teacher or student selected) and study one character. They will first write a Character Analysis Essay, which will show evidence of their understanding of character motivation. Multiple levels of Blooms Taxonomy are included in the specifications for the essay, making it easy to adapt for students of different abilities.
This essay writing also asks students to evaluate the character by determining whether or not they would want to be the character's friend. This requires higher level analysis and allows teachers to see more of the student's understanding of the character and novel.
In addition to the essay, students will have an opportunity to choose a creative project. These are motivating projects that will allow students to demonstrate their understanding in a way that fits their personal learning style.
Also included are a self assessment rubric for students to fill out, a place for students to reflect, and a teacher assessment rubric.
This project was created with 5th grade students in mind, but can easily be adapted.
