Have students create character book brochures tracking and explaining how the protagonist in their favorite book changes as the plot moves towards a resolution. Students are not only asked to infer for character development and theme, they are also asked to cite and analyze relevant evidence from their book. This project includes a student assignment handout (detailing all requirements), a checklist to be used on students' rough drafts (for peer and self assessment to guide revising and editing), and a common core aligned rubric. The project culminates in a presentation for the class. This assignment is not only rigorous, fun, and creative, it also promotes book talk among students. As students present their characters to the class, audience members jot down books they may be interested in reading!
