The Character Comparison Journal Kit for Beginner and Advanced Readers was created for a need I had in my own fourth grade classroom. We were digging into characters and I wanted a journaling activity for my students where they could write about similarities and differences betweeb characters, citing evidence from the text that backed up their thoughts both implicitly through inferring.
Like many classrooms, I have a range of readers with different reading support needs. I created two similar journals for this kit; one for beginners and one for more advanced readers. The beginner’s journal is designed for students in an approximate range between 2nd and 3rd grade. The advanced journal is designed for students in an approximate 4th to 5th grade range. Both are included in this kit so that you may differentiate for your own students. Of course, it’s always nice to have a tool that can be used for multiple grade levels!
Both journals include two pages for note taking. Students will capture traits and feelings in the the beginning journal, and traits, strengths, weaknesses, internal conflicts, external conflicts and resolution in the advanced journal. Students will then analyze the characters and synthesize their findings into a venn diagram. Lastly, students will write a short reflection on their analysis of the two characters they are comparing.
The assessment rubric will give you a standard to help you determine how your students did.
The Character Comparison journals are an engaging and visual tool to help your students read and understand texts, digging deeper into what the text says about characters implicitly and through inferring.
