Teach your students about Character Development with this engaging two-week unit. Your students will actually enjoy using their thinking skills while making connections through video clips and songs!
Our Character Development Unit will address the following topics:
- Feelings vs Traits
- Direct vs Indirect Characterization
- Determining Traits through S.T.E.A.L.
- Effects on Others
- Character Motivation
- Round vs Flat Characters
Students will answer questions in a constructed response format - editable for all acronyms.
Independent Student Slideshow
Students are given their own student slideshow that correlates with the mini-lesson.
This google slideshow is aligned with our mini-lessons. Students will practice their new learning through video clips and songs. Students are asked to fill out a chart and answer comprehension questions based on the video clip and the student objective for that day. This slideshow gives students multiple options and allows students to choose the best answer. There are 2 levels that allow for differentiation.
Exit Slips + Answer Key
We use this as a quick check for understanding by mostly using short texts for them to apply their learning of the skill we focused on that day. We tried to provide a variety of tasks, but typically students are expected to show their interactions with the text and construct a response to support their thinking.
Vocabulary Flashcards + Assessment + Answer Key
We use this interactive method to expand the vocabulary of our students to include synonyms or new words to describe a character. The vocabulary words were based on character traits used in this product. The assessment checks for understanding. There is a matching section as well as multiple choices, short answer and true/false.
Character Traits Name Game
We use this game to kickstart our unit. It’s a fun way to get students thinking about how we determine traits through character actions. Game instructions are included.
Literacy Center Activity
*Character Traits Word Sort: Students get a chance to enhance their learning in an interactive way. We use this in small groups or review to clarify and practice the elements that distinguish the strategies that authors use to indirectly show us what the character is like. This sort goes hand in hand with our mini-lessons.
Graphic Organizers: These graphic organizers go hand in hand with our mini-lessons and yet another resource to check for understanding. We use these when students are working on short text/excerpts. Students fill out the graphic organizers according to their text and apply their new learning from the mini-lessons.
