Learning, growing and meeting goals are often fairly abstract concepts for children who have limited life experiences and are just beginning to truly grasp the concept of time. This story and the image of the mountain were chosen to make the experience of choice more concrete. The image of the mountain was also chosen because it takes a long time to climb, it takes hard work, and it’s fraught with difficulty, but it’s so awesome once you’ve attained the summit!
An inherent value in this story is the idea of learning for learning’s sake and not for some extrinsic reward. As Dr. Maria Montessori observed, true learning is, at its deepest level, a development of the self.
