Wishing you had a way to integrate tough issues of diversity and tolerance? This resource pack is one of my favorites - so relevant and important for our students today. It's a terrific way to introduce your students to the Holocaust in a grade appropriate way. This pack will provide you with lesson plans, discussion questions, connected vocabulary logs, concept cards, and exit tickets for 3 books that focus on issues of tolerance and diversity. Picture books to use include: Sneetches, The Yellow Star - The Legend of King Christian X, and The Cats in Krasinski Square. These books are award-winning books that will provide your students with historical background of the Holocaust. Additionally, and just as important, they promote discussion and reflection about how they can make a difference and promote tolerance today in their own lives. These read-alouds and activities can be used by teachers, guidance counselors and librarians/media specialists. Each book could be done in 1-3 40 minute periods, beginning with Sneeches and progressing forward to expand students' understanding of issues of bravery, resistance, defiance, leadership, and unity. Or, pick and choose what you would like to use. Integrate the lessons with technology, by using maps to search for countries involved in World War II or to type reflections, exit tickets and book reviews. Lessons can be included during Social Studies, Language Arts/Reading, Morning Meetings, Library, or Character Education. Reflections and exit tickets will look great on your bulletin boards, and book review can be video taped for parent-student sharing.
