PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

After several years in the classroom, I realized that my students needed instruction on HOW to be kind, respectful, and all the things I was asking them to be. I developed these units to support teachers in teaching and rewarding great character in the classroom! Building a classroom community is one of the most important things teachers can do and it greatly impacts our students academically! This unit on SELF-AWARENESS is part of a year-long curriculum for teaching students how to have great character! However, this unit could also be used as a stand-alone resource for teaching all about self-awareness in the classroom. :)

Lesson 1-What Does It Mean to Be Self-Aware?
Your class will watch a fun video with a song about who they are and what makes them special. Then you'll create a chart together with traits that make people special. After the class discussion, your students will draw a self-portrait and use sentence stems to describe themselves.

Lesson 2-How Do I Like to Learn?
In this lesson, you'll give your students an activity to complete and "test" how they like to learn. Your students will do things quietly, with music, sitting, standing, and more! After they're done trying all the different ways, you'll graph your class results. Students will show how they like to learn and you can remind them of this when they have free choice, flexible seating, etc.

Lesson 3-What Am I Really Good At?
As a class, you will discuss things that people are really good at (drawing things, playing soccer, being a kind friend, etc) and watch a short encouraging video about making the world a better place. Then your students will think about what makes THEM special and what THEY are great at and how they can use that to change the world! They'll create a flipbook or write about it.

Lesson 4-What Steps Help Me Reach My Goals?
To begin the lesson, you'll read an original short story about a parrot who wants to learn to speak. Your class will come up with steps to help the parrot reach her goal. Then students will think of a goal they have and write about what steps will help them reach their goal.
