Students can practice character perspective/ point of view while reading the short story, The Challenge, by Gary Soto (found in Houghton Mifflin Reading Triumphs textbook - 6th grade). This practice focuses on the varying perspectives of Jose and Estela, the two main characters in the story. Estela, the new student, captures the eye of Jose and leads students through a humor filled story of young love and the challenges of seeking someone else's approval. Students use the graphic organizer to record each character's perspective and provide textual evidence to support their POV. This practice ends with students developing a strong paragraph in which they describe how the Jose’s perspective has developed and changed from the beginning to the end of the story.
