This is a one-page record and generation tool for literary characters, particularly their personality traits and appearance. This has been particularly effective for me in creative writing classes for students who have trouble coming up with original character ideas, and with maintaining those characteristics consistently throughout a story.
This tool takes the form of a character sheet that students may be familiar with from video games or role playing games. It asks them to start by generating personality traits from a list, either two positive and one negative, or two negative and one positive from a table where opposing traits can't be selected for the same character. There are then tables to complete to flesh out occupation, hobbies, appearance etc.
This is a great launching point for students who are unsure or nervous about beginning a story and creating a character, or those who simply need an organizational tool for their characters.
With little or no modification it could also be used as record-keeping or note-taking form for pre-existing characters that appear in texts in a literature class, or for class role-playing activities.
It's both fun for the kids, and effective for you. Enjoy!
