This is an activity that that focuses on character traits. Students choose a character that is in their independent reading book, or a character you have read about together. They draw a portrait of the character, using details they have read from the text. Then, they add character traits that apply to the character around the portrait. On the provided lines on the page, they explain why they chose those character traits.
The product includes a chart of character traits to help the students brainstorm.
I love to use this in stations as a alternative to the typical reading response activities. It challenges students to make inferences about the character and use details to justify their thinking. The students don't realize how much they're being challenged because they're getting to draw and be creative.
This could also be used as a homework assignment after teaching character traits.
The product includes one page with a frame for the portrait and and lines for the writing, and another page with only a frame and no lines, depending on your preferences.
