Character Trait, Theme, Author's Message and Summary Graphic Organizers

Use these graphic organizers to teach the Core Standards on characters, inferring, theme, and summarizing.

The set includes a character trait list that has examples and lines so that students can add to it throughout the year and a graphic organizer for inferring about character traits by using evidence such as actions, thoughts and quotes from the story.

Also included is a handout that defines theme and author's message, gives examples of each, and has lines for students to add to as the year goes on. To go along with that handout is another graphic organizer that students would use to identify clues from the text that help them to make inferences about a story's theme or author's message.

Lastly, a graphic organizer is included that uses shapes to help students remember what elements of fiction they should include when writing a summary. One copy has the elements identified on it, and another copy is left blank for students to use once they are familiar with the graphic organizer.
