Many of my students were confused when it came to character traits or temporary emotions-- they thought they were interchangeable. So I created this classroom poster, mini-lesson, and sorting activity. The sorting activity is in two formats. You can cut the cards and have the students manually sort into two piles for a kinetic hands-on activity, or you can call students up to the smart board using the sorting vortex activity.
The duration of this mini-lesson and sorting activity is about 20 minutes (if you're doing the manual paper sort allow a few more minutes for supply distribution). This would be perfect as the first half of the period before you read a fiction short story. You can also follow it up by doing a personal reflection where students think about their own personality traits and temporary emotions.
