Character traits are such an important concept in upper grades, but I find my students use the same words over and over: nice, funny, etc. I wanted to expand their vocabulary when it came to character traits, so I started doing a "Character Trait of the Day!" Not only did they learn a lot of different traits, this also led to great conversations!
How to use: This comes with a powerpoint with 180 slides, a trait for each day of the school year! Each slide has a character trait along with its definition. For the students, there is a cover page as well as a page to record the trait, definition, use it in a sentence, and draw a picture. Each student keeps the booklet in their desk, and as they learn each trait they are creating a dictionary of character traits to use as a reference!
One of the things I like best about this it we do it first thing in the morning, which gives them something to start on right away. It takes about 10 minutes total, and I love giving all students the opportunity to share their sentences to cover those speaking standards :) In addition, I love that learning different character traits also leads to discussions of what kind of person we want to be! Which traits do we want to represent us? Boom! Character education :)
