Product Description
Teach and practice character traits with four different types of activities including hot seat spotlight cards, character trait description cards, character portraits, and ten printables. Students will identify character traits and cite evidence to support their analysis.

Hot Seat Spotlight
10 Cards with each with a different character from favorite children’s books (characters that are well known and identifiable). Students sit in small groups; one student then volunteers to be in the “hot seat.” Then another student asks questions based on a character trait of that character. The hot seat volunteer answers in character citing evidence from the story.

Character Portraits Match Up
Use the Character Portraits during Hot Seat Spotlight. Tape a craft stick to the back, to use it as a face mask. Use the Character Portraits to match with the Character Traits word cards. Display a Character Portrait and have a student select a trait that describes the character. The student must use evidence from the story to match it. Play a game of “I’m thinking of a character who is _____, ______, and ________ (insert character traits). Who am I?” Have the students use the Character Portraits to set up “play dates” between characters they feel would get along based on their traits.

Character Trait Cards
32 cards, each with a paragraph describing a character trait. Students sit in groups of 4 then one reads the paragraph and the others must identify the trait from the three answers provided. Don’t want to use them in a small group? Use them whole class or in a literacy center. Included is an answer key.

Ten Printables
• FBI Most Wanted
• Missing Character
• Snapshot Portrait for student
• Snapshot Portrait for a friend
• Snapshot Portrait for a story character
• Draw a portrait of a character
• Photo Booth
• Make a Play Date
• Character Text Chat
• Riddle Me This!

Included is a quick reference Character Trait Chart for sorting traits by positive traits, neutral traits, and negative traits.

Though identifying character traits is only one part of the standard, this product will benefit students who need more practice with the traits first, before delving into the analysis of the character.
