Here's a hands-on, creative way to practice identifying the character traits in a short story! This is an engaging activity where your students read a short passage and determine the character trait for the main character(s) in the story. The finished products make a unique holiday bulletin board or fun school hallway display!

Students read four short stories on the three-page worksheet packet. After reading each story, your students will determine the character trait for the six main characters in the passages.

When they finish the worksheet, they can begin the craftivity! Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. (An answer key is also included.)

Students are instructed to label a frame with the name and a character trait. Then, they draw an appropriate face to match the character trait. For example, if the character's trait is "stubborn", students should NOT draw a happy face! Students also create a self portrait, and choose a character trait for themselves!

My hope is that when my students see the word “character trait” in the future (perhaps even on a standardized test!), they will recall this experience of making “character trait picture frames” and remember the meaning of the word!
