Character Traits! Use this thought-provoking character traits activity in preparing your students to critically analyze characters in any text, including a standardized test. The graphic organizer part of the assignment can be done as a regular assignment, a warm-up, a time-filler, extra-credit, writing homework, early-finisher work etc. It is intended to be repeated many times with different traits. There are also two provided writing assignments (individual and partner) to extend the activity during any of its uses. See the preview for a closer look!
Students draw a random character trait from the provided 160 cards. (Traits are a mixture of physical, emotional, and personality traits.) They then use a graphic organizer to fully analyze that trait including things such as its definition, reasons a character may have that trait, evidence you would see in the text etc. As you do this assignment repeatedly, students will become more comfortable analyzing characters, their motivations, and identifying their traits through provided evidence.
To extend the activity, there are two choices for a creative writing assignment where students will use the information on their completed graphic organizers to write a fictional story about the character, who must display the trait clearly. (One version is individual while the other uses the information from two students’ graphic organizers as partners.)
