Introduction to Character Analysis Graphic Organizer using I Can Hear the Sun by Patricia Polacco
This graphic organizer is used by students to record words or phrases that they might use to describe four of the main characters in the book. This activity assumes that students have had limited experience identifying character traits and is used as a precursor to a more in depth study of character analysis.
Before reading: Students are given a copy of the graphic organizer. Discuss expectations for completion of the character trait chart on side one.
During reading: As the teacher reads the story aloud, students will record words or phrases that they might use to describe each of the four main characters in the book on side one of the graphic organizer.
After reading: Students independently complete the questions on side two of the graphic organizer. After they have answered the questions, students meet in small groups to discuss their answers.
Meet whole class to discuss responses and extend learning. Understanding what kind of person a particular character is the first step to being able to analyze their motives and actions.
