The included documents are the brainstorming and reflection phase of a project my students create in order to better understand the vocabulary of character traits and their ability to create a personality by having them look at their own traits before we delve into characters in a story. Product includes: brainstorming, rough draft, reflection prompt, rubric, font ideas
After completing the brainstorming pages, students have two final product options: a hands on “I am” poster or a digital Canva poster (canva.com). The requirements are the same for both posters. I wanted to give students a hands-on and a digital option so that students could use their preferred skills and interests.
The “I Am” poster is collage-based, but could be generated in any way as long as the general character traits guidelines are followed. Students could work with glue,
magazine cut-outs, paper, markers, stickers, etc. Every element included in the poster
should point back as a symbol of the student’s personality, so every element is purposefully included in the design.
Canva is a website that allows students to craft beautifully designed posters from
scratch or template. Students work on the background, layout, text, and image to
create designs in a variety of dimensions. This options can provide structure (the template) for students, but students could also start completely blank and design it all themselves.
In addition to the poster, students can write a reflection paragraph that explains some key elements of their posters that the brainstorming did not already explain. This is where students will practice writing with details and personal examples. Here they can also explain their most important trait, a prompt asking them to summarize their entire project.
This reflection can be used to help students present their posters by giving them some speaking points.
