This is a one page per character assignment that has students choosing specific traits within a category for the character, then providing an example or quote to prove it.
Since you can't know all of these traits for all characters, I usually had the students choose multiple characters in order to come up with a total of perhaps 50 traits found = multiple pages of this assignment. Each character page has around 20 categories for traits. It works because the students have to identify the specifics, while the categories head them in some of the right directions. Go ahead and make it mandatory to use AWE (author's words exactly) or encourage students to guess speculate if the author gives NO evidence. You choose how to use this template.
I added an extra slot for a write-in trait. You can add more or delete it. Link to Google Doc means the assignment can do done online, but you can also print it off (just make sure you're dealing with well-defined characters). Good for group learning. Helps students remember characters in complicated texts (novels).
