PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This activity is designed for To Kill a Mockingbird, but can be modified to study characterization for any piece of fiction.

Students search back through the text for textual evidence that represents five areas of a character: his/her thoughts (head), what he/she cares most about (heart), typical speech from that character (mouth), what the character is most often doing (hands), and how that character changes (legs).

Students explore what characters say about themselves as well as what is implied through narration and what is said to and about them by other characters.

I suggest that you anticipate this project by having students read with a purpose, scanning for quotes they can gather for their project.
