This is a two-page Power Point slide show that first breaks down genres into the two general categories of fiction and non-fiction, and then the fiction section is broken down into realistic fiction and fantasy. Within these different sub-categories, this visual shows the characteristics of more specific genres, such as sports fiction, historical fiction, mystery (under the realistic fiction heading), and science fiction, adventure, and traditional literature (under the fantasy heading). I have used this as a handout/study guide that students can keep in their binders as a reference. Students who do book reports and need to identify the genre of the book they read would be able to use this reference to help them identify the genre and explain what makes them think they have picked the most accurate label. It could also be printed out and turned into a poster for the classroom wall/bulletin board.
