What are the characteristics of life? What classifies something as "living"? This inquiry activity and the corresponding worksheets will help students test their presupposed thinking by observing living and non-living specimens. Each specimen has ONE characteristic of living things, but only the living specimens will demonstrate ALL of the characteristics.

This lab is a perfect introduction to life science or biology and gets students thinking immediately. The inquiry-style lesson allows for challenging peer discussions as well as individual thinking.
