Provide an engaging way to teach students about the characteristics of stars: brightness, color, temperature, composition, and size.
Students start the lesson by participating in an open sort activity. I give partners an envelope that contains each of the cut-out clue cards. I challenge students to arrange the cards based on the characteristics of stars. Our school uses Thinking Maps, so I tell them that they are trying to build a tree map. After about 10 minutes or so, we move to the notes presentation. Students record their notes, and check their open sort, as we move through each characteristic.
The zip file contains: a 1 page PDF of the open sort clue cards, an 8 slide PowerPoint presentation that goes through the information, and an 8 page PDF copy of the PowerPoint.
