What is it?
This Characterization Graphic Organizer is a time-saving tool that breaks down four elements of character analysis into workable chunks.
Why is it needed?
While reading fiction, it can be difficult for students to keep track of all of the author’s techniques for bringing a character to life. This organizer can be used to track a single character’s development over the course of a chapter or an entire novel. By breaking down characterization into its parts, students can see how each of the parts works with the others to build a believable character.
How is it used?
This character analysis tool can be used as a stand-alone exercise; however, it is most effective as a pre-writing tool for a characterization paragraph or essay. Younger students can turn each box into a sentence to form a paragraph. Older students can turn each box into a paragraph to form a cohesive character development essay.
The graphic organizer can be reused for multiple characters in a novel or for the same character at the beginning and end of the novel to track his or her development. This same tool can be applied to every text read during the school year.
In my classroom, I had students keep track of the characterization elements as we read, and I had them jot down the page numbers with their notes for easy reference when it was time to write an essay.
What is included?
Your download includes a PDF version of the characterization graphic organizer. The organizer includes room at the top for students to define characterization followed by a chart of four characterization elements. At the bottom of the page is space for students to draw a conclusion about the character based on the gathered evidence.
