Teaching Direct and Indirect Characterization

Product/Materials Preface:

These English Language Arts Unit Resources come with a 3 page introductory mini-lesson on Characterization and Character Motivation but the accompanying graphic organizers focus on Direct and Indirect Characterization. Nevertheless, you can use them as mini-lessons, posters, or handouts. I have also included a notes page. Click the following for my parallel lessons and resources:

I have provided FORTY (40) unique graphic organizers to help students collect and analyze data on Direct and Indirect Characterization. Because of the variations you can choose from a multitude of forms to help differentiate your instruction. Some of the organizers focus on one particular character or multiple characters in a work. You can now cater to your students’ needs by pairing students with the right organizer.

When working with your students encourage them to brainstorm various stories they have read and movies they have seen in the past; but your students don’t have to draw on prior knowledge. You can use the visual aids to focus on a particular book you are studying. It can be a class novel or your students’ independent reading books. You can use the organizers for guided reading, book clubs, and literature circles. You are only limited by your imagination.
