STEAL is a great strategy to use when teaching students (3-5) to identify character traits. Students focus on the following things while reading: Speech, thoughts, Effect on others, actions and looks.

•STEAL bookmark (front cover)
•2 mini passages with student response sheet for explicit practice with the STEAL strategy
•1 student response sheet for practice with leveled text of choice
•1 assessment sheet that does not include the STEAL strategy, but just traits and proof
•1 assessment sheet that includes STEAL strategy and requires students to identify 2 traits and record proof
•1 rubric for assessing student performance on their assessment
