One of the best ways to get to know somebody is through a character sketch. This worksheet is to be used over the course of a longer work, to be taken out and "nibbled" at every few days. It focuses the students' attention on how the narrator describes the character (direct characterization,) and more importantly, it focuses on higher-order thinking skills, like making inferences (indirect characterization.) Furthermore it forces students to cite the page from which the reference comes. In addition the student must explain how this qouted text is important to the story. When used throughout the course of a novel, the students can then track the character's development from beginning to end.
