Here's a great resource to use with students in multiple ways. Give students a word which identifies the character's feeling, then have students locate three quotes which support the given feeling. Students are always encouraged to copy significant parts of the quote. In this way selective thinking is utilized. Students then narrow quotes to the BEST one and explain their choice. Or the student identifies a word to describe a character's feelings based on the quotes given by the teacher. Students then are free to defend their choice of quote. Or students can complete both aspects of the practice. In any case, students will receive the practice they need in preparation for the state testing, and to simply brush up on textual evidence.
