Introduction: Within Australia, Charles Blackman remains perhaps its most beloved artist. Born in 1928, he is still alive but has dementia. Nevertheless, his friends, neighbors, colleagues and patrons came together to care for him as he declined with the illness.
His earliest success was with the "Schoolgirl" series. This revolved around the death of a schoolfriend which his wife Barbara experienced. Then there were his paintings of his walks around the inner city of Melbourne and his many painted immersions of people in the ocean. His Alice series was a huge hit, inspired by reading aloud "Alice in Wonderland" to his wife as she was losing her vision.
Blackman was a member of all the other well known high points of Australian art history too, such as being part of Heide, the art commune run by the Reeds. Plus he was a member of the Antipodean Society, which held off a complete take over by abstract art at the same time it was shunting everything else aside in the rest of the world.
