This lesson is designed to have students read one non-fiction article that has been differentiated to meet their reading level (4 articles to choose from). Students first read independently and complete the first box on the notes sheet. Then students meet with other students who read the same article and complete the second box on the notes sheet. Finally, jig saw the students and place them into a group with students who read other articles. Students should share the key details from their article, draw inferences and conclusions about Charles Dickens, and have a better understanding of the theme and characters from A Christmas Carol.
At the seventh grade level this was a difficult lesson for students. I had students reflect on the struggle, and we talked as a class about how it is okay to struggle while reading. The goal of the activity is to help support the students through the struggle, ultimately having them feel successful with the content.
