This lesson is build around the Charles Dickens short-story "The Signal-Man." It pairs the story with an informational article about the Clayton Tunnel train crash; the event that is believed to have inspired "The Signal-Man." This lesson includes warm-up activities, vocabulary building, comprehension activities, short-answer and essay writing, brief explanation of irony, creative extension activity, and connecting the fiction story with the informational article. Depending on class length and how many of the learning activities you do, this lesson can span from 3 to 8 class periods.
