This biographical resource about Charles Dickens also includes an "A Christmas Carol" activity as well as a good variety of reading and writing activities for middle and high school English students.
--- 3 biographical informational texts about Dickens - each of the texts includes questions on the right side of the page
--- a reading passage about and a writing assignment for his novella A Christmas Carol;
--- a set of short essay questions relating to the passages;
--- an answer key.
- Each passage can be used individually or all may be assigned in order over time, for example, as bellringer activities.
- I have also included the three biographical passages as one continuous reading passage (with slight changes).
- The unit also includes an in-class writing assignment and a set of essay questions.
Most of my Five Days With... units have five biographical passages but in the case of Dickens I decided to change it to include a passage about A Christmas Carol and a writing assignment where students write a modern version of the classic. The students might need a little more background on the story for this but this would be a great class discussion topic where the students could pool their knowledge and ideas. They could also be assigned doing research on the story before completing the activity. It would also work very well, of course, if the students have read the novella itself.
