For a pre-reading vocabulary activity, this PowerPoint shows vocabulary from the short story "Charles" by Shirley Jackson. The PowerPoint is set up with the word and a related picture on one slide and the definition on the following slide. The purpose of this is to engage the students in thinking about what they think the word means based off the picture. Depending on what the top of your desks are made out of, you can have your students write what they think the word means on their desk or on a small white board with an expo marker. My students enjoyed this activity! Also, the pictures are a great combination with the word for lower level, ESOL, and ELL students.
