Here’s how the conversation goes with my class right before we start reading Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. Most students say they already read it, heard it, or saw the movie. I reply “you may have done all of those things, but in my class you will experience the story in a way you have never read a book before. You’ll make friends with all of the characters and in the end, you won’t want the story to end!”

That’s really what happens after our two week visit through the weavings of the wonderful author that penned this story many years ago, and is still a favorite today!

Each of the 6 Modules in this Charlotte's Web unit are designed to integrate reading, writing, spelling, word work, science, and social studies, and are based on higher level thinking skills. It can be adapted to a whole class read, small group reading based on same or mixed levels, book club strategies, or combinations. This unit is written for a third grade classroom (with inclusion students through gifted students), but can be easily adapted for different grade levels and mixed ability groupings.

Here's a brief description of what’s included (check the preview file for much more detail):
- Teacher Instructions & Suggestions Packet

- Module 1: Charlotte’s Web Activity Pages. This module is set up for each chapter of the story. I read the chapters with them, then as each chapter was read, students would do the corresponding activity, and were allowed to reread independently to locate answers, or sometimes work with partners or in small groups to give variety to the activities. The cover page is a web with story elements that the students can fill in as they come to the part of the story that would have that information or how they would express their own opinion.

- Module 2: Spelling words list and activities.

- Module 3: Editing activities called Daily Language Practice

- Module 4: Vocabulary word activities.

- Module 5: Narrative writing portion based on an in depth study of one of the characters. Here the students become the teacher and “grade” the character on their traits, behavior, and personalities! Then the students write a narrative letter to their chosen character explaining how they were graded.

- Module 6: Spider Science Report. Since the story has so much information about spiders explained by Charlotte herself, the story lends a great opportunity to delve into the world of spiders! Included is an expository writing organizer and lesson plans for students to write about spiders through research, prewriting, editing, revising, publishing, and presenting a final copy of a specific spider chosen by each student.

******Note: Module 6 is a great way to integrate technology using the internet to locate information, have the students use a word processor to write drafts and final copies, then email their results to the teacher for a grade. They can also do a presentations for each other locating illustrations and making posters that can be copied on to iPads and presented. ******

As you can see, this unit integrates many subjects across the curriculum and the students become immersed in the story of how true friendships develop among the characters.

As the end of this unit approaches, many students often tell me they are sad to see the story end. I’ve even found that later in the school year students refer back to this unit in some way as they make a connection between this unit and other lessons we do.

Over the years, I’ve found this to be one of my favorite units to teach, because of the high level of engagement with the students!
