In this literary text by E.B. White, Wilbur, a farm pig, is saved as a little runt by an adoring young girl, Fern. As Fern grows older and spends less time with Wilbur, Wilbur grows lonely, until he meets a spider named Charlotte. In this lesson sequence, the teacher uses a variety of strategies to actively engage students with the popular chapter book, Charlotte’s Web. Students gain comfortability with complex texts they cannot access themselves by reading along with their teacher. This lesson is a part of the Read Aloud Project, a joint venture between Student Achievement Partners and the Council of the Great City Schools that focuses on bringing robust picture book and chapter book read-alouds to our K-2 classrooms.
