This is a fully scripted CCLS-aligned unit lesson plan for Charlotte's Web that includes:
4 weeks (or longer, depending on pacing at teacher's discretion) of VERY scripted plans for all "turn and talks" during whole group lesson, and differentiated questioning for group.
A daily choice of 3 levels of differentiated constructed-response questions for students to use while in groups/partnerships (color-coded and ready for printing as a full page that can be a "menu" of choice for students to refer to. I like to insert these pages in plastic menu holders to display on students' tables as they work).
1 cut and paste activity to sort sensory details from the novel
1 generic sensory detail sorting chart
A list of suggested pre-vocabulary words for each chapter
Assessment quiz/tests for chapters 1-16
2 options for culminating tasks at end of novel
All questions are designed as higher-order thinking questions, using "Depth of Knowledge" question stems wherever possible. "Turn and talks" are scripted to ensure student-led discussion during whole group lesson. Small group/partner questions are set up as a student choice, with 3 levels of difficulty/support.
Once my students were familiar with the routine of this group/partner work, I saw a dramatic improvement in their ability to form an evidence-based constructed responses. They loved working from the plastic "menus" at their tables, and I loved seeing them grow as critical thinkers and readers!
