Some Novel Study!
Hello! Thank you for your purchase of one of my favorite novel studies! If you have purchased any of my other studies, you’ll notice this one is a tad different. I did not leave room in this particular study for illustrations, because we use a new method now: matchbook squares. Life changing!! If you are looking for a study similar to my One and Only Ivan, Bad Kitty, Crenshaw, etc. send me an email! We dug SO deep with this study, and I feel as though it is perfect for our students! My Because of Winn Dixie study is closely aligned to this one!
So here goes:
Every day we read a chapter of the novel. Another gold mine I stumbled across was E. B. White reading the novel on Youtube. We then use a variety of structures (Kagan, Whole Brain Teaching, etc.) to complete the “summary” sheet. The students list the characters, summary, character traits for the main characters, and theme. I teach character traits and theme through the novel, and some years we don't reach completing the theme section until after chapter 5 or more! You know your students!
We dig through the vocabulary using context clues or dictionary skills. The questions can be completed with partners or independently. This is where I practice much of our restating the question, providing text evidence, and grammar.
After working with the chapter, my students complete a matchbook square. They fill out the summary inside of the square, and draw an illustration of the front. They keep up with all squares in a Ziplock until the end of the novel, and we create a lapbook. I get to a point where I tell students they may write “see matchbook square” in the summary section of the page in their packet.
We do an informational writing on pigs after the first few chapters. They love learning how smart pigs really are! We do a spider research along chapters 8-0.
