This is the quiz I crafted based on my daily objectives for the first eight chapters. The first three sections all zoom in on vocabulary, as this book has a lot of challenging vocabulary. When I crafted this unit, I had a lot of English language learners, so I challenged them to identify a word's part of speech to help them in determining its meaning. As a result, there is a section on matching vocabulary, sorting the words by parts of speech, and using the words in complete sentences. There is a second section on determining the tone or mood of unfamiliar passages, as we zoomed in on how the tone and mood changed and looked at specific evidence.

Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when encountering an unknown term important to comprehension or expression.
Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate.
Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening.
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, in the grades 4–5 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
