Use this product as you read Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. He clearly uses themes throughout the text – especially when he introduces and concludes each chapter.
On the top line I have students record the theme of how each chapter is introduced and concluded (ex. time of day, character, weather, day of the week, setting, etc,)
The bottom lines are used for a quick summary of how the chapter begins or ends.
Example – Chapter 1 is introduced with “time of day” because Fern is eating breakfast. Chapter 1 is concluded with “Character” because Fern names her pig Wilbur.
By the end of the book (22 chapters) students can refer back and notice how E.B White used these themes as he wrote this incredible text!
This can be used independently, during centers or in a guided group. It provides great discussion points and student engagment as they listen carefully.
