-introduction to metronome tempo markings
-analysis of the most popular tempo markings in a class survey
-relating metronome numbers and Italian tempo terms
Tempo markings (from Latin tempus ‘time’) indicate the speed at which a passage of music should be played. Metronomes (digital, online, and mechanical) provide a regular tick sound that marks time at a chosen number: ticks (beats) per minute.
This activity asks the students to complete a chart to give examples of their favourite music (classical and/or popular). Students need to determine the starting tempo of the piece by using their choice of a metronome - see the link below for the online metronome, if interested. Encourage them to find samples of each tempo category.
A survey could be prepared to generate the most popular tempos used.
Extension: students find out what the key signatures of their pieces are.
Jamn PLAYER - Jam, listen, create (MiQ Limited) - App Store. This app analyses songs in the device library for key/chords showing guitar and piano chords.
Students could also match up their tempos with the traditional Italian tempo markings, or create their own.
