This lesson was designed as an introduction to Geoffrey Chaucer and the Canterbury Tales for the high school level, although it could be tweaked for younger students. It includes a PowerPoint and accompanying guided notes handout, as well as an interactive group activity in which students create their own stories and vote on the best one (just as Chaucer's characters intended to do!). The PowerPoint lesson begins with student assumptions about Kate Middleton and then the surprising other things she has accomplished; this provides a transition into what we traditionally know Chaucer for (the Canterbury Tales) but also some interesting facts about his life that we may not have known. This lesson also covers frame stories and includes modern examples of frame stories, such as How I Met Your Mother and The Emperor's New Groove, to help students connect to the concept. Students will fill in their guided notes as the teacher moves through the lesson and will conclude the lesson by getting into groups, writing a short story, and voting on the winner. This lesson can be tailored for fit a class time of anywhere from 45 minutes to 90 minutes.
