My students love this activity where they compete to see who will end up with the most money! Each student will take turns drawing cards that have a statement for either a deposit or a withdrawal that they record on their check register.
o I have my students split into groups of 3 – 5 for this activity
o Pass out ‘Check Register Challenge’ to each student.
o Have each student draw a ‘Starting Balance’ card and record the amount on their check register
Modified (simpler version): Have each start with $1000
o Students will take turns drawing a card from the ‘Deposit/Withdrawal’ stack and recording it on their check register.
During each players turn, I have everyone in the group checking for accuracy (either on a separate piece of notebook paper or maker boards).
You can set a time limit or ‘Round’ limit for your students to finish and the person with the highest
Modification: You can have a minimum balance set ($100 or if a student’s balance goes into the negatives) that they also get a bank fee of $35 as well)
o Exit ticket idea – Have your students come up with their own ‘Deposit/Withdrawal cards and show what it would look like on a check register
