When students begin to write in a new language, both group and individual writing strategies should be used. To help students as they edit their own writing and that of others, a simple checklist can be very useful. We have provided four checklists that will help your English language learners as they edit. The first is a simple Writer's Self-Check that asks the students to check Yes or No to evaluate their own writing. The same checklist is then turned into an Editor's Check tool that asks the same questions.
There are two STOP forms;
(1) Prompts younger students to check four basic characteristics of their writing: spelling; title; OK looking; punctuation.
(2) A version for older students that uses the same acronym to check for higher level skill: sentence structure; thesis statement; overall appearance; punctuation.
