The strategy check for understanding suggests that students ask themselves questions after reading pieces of a text. These check marks make it possible for students to self regulate this. They act as a reminder of the types of questions they should be asking themselves during the reading process. I attached them to key chain rings along with other tools for other strategies to allow students to have a ring of strategies to choose from. They were so popular that when I looped up with my class, many students showed up the first day of school with their strategy rings ready to go!
