Just like the weather outside, our feelings, focus, and state of being can change throughout the day. However, these abstract and metacognitive concepts can be a CHALLENGE to recognize or talk about! Teaching students to check their “internal weather” will encourage self monitoring and gives these concepts a concrete base for further exploration. After teaching conceptually what it means to be “sunny” “cloudy” or “stormy” internally, together brainstorm other alternative language to describe the same feeling. Also, explore strategies to “wait out” or even better, “prepare for” the storm. The weather inside AND outside is always changing! It may be helpful to discover student trends over time or allow multiple students to report their weather at once. A “weather chart” graph is included for this purpose.
