No matter if you're in person with your students or teaching them online, these checking lessons will work for you! From writing checks to reconciling, it's covered in this bundle of lessons.
So many different classes require teaching students about checking. Even in a more digital world, checks still have a purpose and appropriate time to be used. This lesson introduces checks to students by explaining when checks can and should be used, how to mail a check (mainly because so many students graduate without knowing how to address an envelope), the parts of a check, and how to fill out a check.
A teacher guide is provided to walk you through the parts of the lesson. Instructional slides, student note sheets, a practice worksheet, and exit ticket are all provided using google docs & slides. An answer key for this assignment is provided!
Void Endorse & Deposit Checking Lesson
There is so much more that students should know about checking than just how to actually write a check. This lesson teaches students how to void checks and why they might need to void a check, how to endorse checks in 4 different ways, and how to fill out a deposit slip. The provided teacher instructions file gives you tips on how to complete the lesson.
You'll start the lesson using the provided slideshow to show students how to complete each of items discussed in the lesson. Students can take notes digitally using the Google Doc link. There is a practice activity with a provided answer key. Your class will get the opportunity to practice voiding and endorsing checks as well as completing deposit slips.
If someone is going to write a check, they also need to know how to fill out the register. This lesson explains the parts of a check register and what can go in each section as well as gives multiple examples of how to fill it out in different scenarios. The teacher guide provided gives tips on how to complete the lesson.
A slideshow is included to introduce the check register to your class. The note sheet for the lesson is provided. Once the notes are complete, a worksheet is given so students can practice completing a check register on their own. While completing the worksheet, students will practice filling out checks and deposit slips as they fill out the register for transactions. An answer key is provided. Materials are provided in google docs and slides.
Once students understand how to complete a check register, it's important that they understand how to reconcile. This lesson teaches them how to reconcile in a simple way. A teacher guide is included to help you understand how to use the resources provided. You can use the slideshow to teach your class what bank statements and reconciling are, the three simple steps to reconcile, and how to actually complete the process. As you teach, your students can follow along with the provided note sheet.
Once the notes are complete, there is a two part practice to assign to your class. In part one, students will dig into why it's important to reconcile. Meanwhile, in part two your students can practice reconciling on their own for a two month period. All materials are provided in Google Slides & Docs.
This activity is great to use when your class has learned all about checking. The activity gives a list of transactions and has students record them in the check register as well as practicing writing some of the checks and completing deposit slips. Once the register is complete, students will practice reconciling with the bank statement and endorsing checks based on given scenarios.
The activity is given in both a Google Slides format for easy editing. An answer key is provided.
